Sister Saturdays

Updated: Oct 7, 2023

At the beginning of this year, my sister and I made a promise that we would dedicate one Saturday out of each month to spend time with each other. We decided to create a safe place for each other to be vulnerable and call it our "Sister Saturday". During this time, we usually have deep conversations over brunch or dinner.

January "Breaking Cycles"

In January, we went to brunch at Baker's Crust. The food was delicious. Our waiter was a dope aspiring singer, whom I encouraged not to give up on his dreams. But our conversation was the highlight of this visit. This was definitely a turning point in our relationship. Just to let you know, our closeness did not happen overnight. It took some years for us to get here. We both struggled with trust issues. We were able to discuss ways to break cycles for ourselves and family. This is where the idea of having a sister Saturday came from as we made plans to do this every month. For us, breaking cycles for us would require us to be open and honest with each other. We then created a safe space for each other to be vulnerable. Before our brunch date was over, we told each other that we would hold one another accountable for what we talked about. We made plans for our February "Sister Saturday" but unfortunately, I was not feeling well.

March "Walking In Your Truth"

For March, my sister had to make the plans and she wanted to surprise me. I wanted to make up for missing our February get together by staying the weekend with her. Since she is a new business owner, this was the perfect weekend to also pitch ideas and get some things created for her. That Friday night was spent doing just that. Saturday, we did some shopping and prepared for our dinner. We got dressed and my sister kept me wondering as she drove to the restaurant. We arrived at Chef's Kitchen and Cocktails. I was in awe of the ambiance. This was a quaint restaurant filled with art and plants. To know me is to know I love both art and plants. So far, my sister had chosen a great spot. Our waitress, Trensiya, was kind and sweet. The food and drinks were delicious. But once again, our conversation was the highlight of our night. We discussed how unhealthy resilience leads to emotional damage. We learned how to be resilient by adapting to adversity in an unhealthy way from our mother. We reminisced about seeing our mother always on the move and never sitting down to enjoy moments to herself. She withstood a lot. I truly believed that it led to her being diagnosed with cancer, along with some other stressful factors.

Moving forward from this conversation, my sister and I agreed to walk in our truth as we continue to break cycles. Walking in our truth is knowing our limits. We will no longer succumb to being strong and resilient in situations that are not worth the effort. This was a very powerful "Sister Saturday" and I am looking forward to our next one.
