She looked in the mirror
Unhappy at who she see
Visible flaws and insecurities
Past hurt and pain
Feeling disdain
Reflection of rejection
From perception of deception
Negatively speaking
That's what she was receiving
From her thoughts
Deeply rooted
Became a defense
From herself
Not properly taking care of her mental health
Which is wealth
To see beyond the lies
Disguised
As the truth
If only she knew.
Mirror, mirror on the wall
Finally, she can see past her flaws
The beauty from deep within
Radiates on her glowing brown skin
The longer she stares
She is made aware
Her flaws
Her scars
Her imperfections
Big lips
Big nose
Small hips
Heart of gold
Positively reflected
Imperfectively perfected
She was able to see
In the image of God
The woman she was created to be.
Who is she?
She is me...
She could be you
Or he
Or anyone struggling with their identity
Just know
Your reflection is based off your perception of what you believe to see
And I see beauty
In the reflection of me.

Excerpt from my book, Thoughts of an Unspoken Mind
This was one of my favorite poems written.
I struggled with my identity for many years as I lost myself trying to be who others wanted me to be.
But I've learned that how I am perceived by others is not my problem and their opinions do not validate me.
I am finally at a point in my life where I know who I am and who I am becoming. I am enjoying this journey of learning, growing, and being better than I was yesterday.
